Formula and method

With 60 minutes available per day for five days, 30-minute episodes and 1× playback, the model allows 10 episode equivalents per week before extra-time allowance.

Weekly minutes = 5 × daily available minutes; episode equivalents = playback speed × available minutes / (episode duration × time allowance factor)

Assumptions and limitations

  • This planning model uses five listening days per week, four weeks per month and twelve such months per year: 240 listening days over 48 weeks, not an actual calendar year.
  • Daily time categories must not overlap. Only include situations where listening is suitable and does not interfere with the activity.
  • Playback speed is between 0.5× and 3×, and episode duration must be positive. Fractional episode equivalents are retained; they are not a count of completed episodes.
  • The allowance multiplies required listening time. The retained factors are 1, 1.05, 1.25 and 2; they do not measure comprehension or establish scientifically validated attention percentages.
  • Available-time estimates are arithmetic capacity. Pauses, advertisements, variable episode lengths and individual comprehension can change what you actually finish.

Common questions

Does 25% extra time mean 75% efficiency?

No. Multiplying time by 1.25 gives 1/1.25 = 80% of the no-allowance episode capacity. The options explicitly name the time multiplier.
