How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

A 60 cm waist with ten box pleats gives an 18 cm pleat cut width and 183 cm fabric width.

Knife fabric width = 2 waist + seam allowance; box width = 3 waist + seam allowance

Assumptions and limitations

  • The fixed fullness is two times waist for knife pleats and three times for box pleats. Band dimensions retain the captured layout: doubled requested band depth plus two seam allowances, and waist plus three allowances. Pattern, closure and fabric shrinkage may need more material.

Common questions

What does this estimate assume?

The fixed fullness is two times waist for knife pleats and three times for box pleats. Band dimensions retain the captured layout: doubled requested band depth plus two seam allowances, and waist plus three allowances. Pattern, closure and fabric shrinkage may need more material.

Can I find a missing input?

Clear the unknown field and enter compatible known values. The controls retain supported inverse calculations, while rounded counts and one-way outputs stay directional.

References

Pleat count is a positive whole number; the captured positivity check is retained and an integer check is added. Integer membership is checked with isInteger, so ordinary, tiny and large fractional counts are rejected even when tolerant floor equality would pass.
