Formula and method
A 30 by 20 cm picture, 2 cm mats, 3 cm moulding and 0.5 cm rabbet gives a 39 by 29 cm outside frame.
Outside height = picture height + 2 × mat height + 2 × moulding width − 2 × rabbet

Assumptions and limitations
- The rabbet overlap is subtracted twice from each outside dimension; glazing adds that overlap back to the inner opening. Confirm the supplier dimensions and cutting convention before ordering.
- The extra cutting allowance applies to each of four pieces. The initial allowance unit is millimeters, while the other example measurements use centimeters. This layout does not optimize waste, defects or joinery.
Common questions
How should I interpret this result?
The rabbet overlap is subtracted twice from each outside dimension; glazing adds that overlap back to the inner opening. Confirm the supplier dimensions and cutting convention before ordering.
Can I solve a missing input?
Clear the value you want to find, enter compatible known values, and check the displayed units. Some choices and one-way outputs cannot be solved backward.
