Formula and method

A two-metre-diameter cylinder that is ten metres deep, with the water surface two metres below the top, has an eight-metre water column. Standing water is 8π, approximately 25.1327 m³; the entire cylinder is 10π, approximately 31.4159 m³.

Standing water = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × (total depth − depth to water surface)

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Well diameter
2 m
Total well depth
10 m
Depth from the top to the water surface
2 m
Standing water volume
25.133 m³
Three times the standing water volume
75.4 m³
Full cylindrical bore volume
31.416 m³

Assumptions and limitations

  • It is simply a displayed multiple of the standing-water volume. The calculator does not prescribe pumping, sampling or treatment procedures. It assumes a uniform circular bore and ignores casing displacement, inflow during pumping and other irregularities.
  • Match the units shown and use measured inputs where available. The result follows the stated model and does not account for unentered changes.

Common questions

Is three times the volume a required pumping amount?

It is simply a displayed multiple of the standing-water volume. The calculator does not prescribe pumping, sampling or treatment procedures. It assumes a uniform circular bore and ignores casing displacement, inflow during pumping and other irregularities.
