How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

For ideal 5-to-10 V conversion, 100 kHz switching and 0.5 A peak-to-peak ripple, duty cycle is 50% and inductance is 50 µH.

D = 1−Vin/Vout; L = Vin D/(f ΔI)

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Input voltage
5 V
Output voltage
10 V
Switching frequency
100 kHz
Peak-to-peak ripple current
500 mA
Duty cycle (D)
50 %
Inductance (L)
50 μH

Assumptions and limitations

  • This is an ideal steady-state boost model in continuous conduction. Output voltage exceeds positive input voltage. Ripple current means peak-to-peak inductor-current change; parasitic losses, saturation and controller requirements are outside the model.
  • Enter mutually consistent measurements and clear a quantity before inferring it. Calculations use 64 significant digits; the displayed result is rounded separately.

Common questions

Does this choose a finished inductor component?

It gives the ideal inductance relation. A component choice also depends on peak current, saturation, resistance, thermal behavior, tolerances and the controller design.
