Formula and method
At an assumed yield of 40 bricks per bag, 81 bricks require three whole bags. With 25 kg per bag, their combined dry mass is 75 kg.
Bags = ceiling(masonry count Ă· entered yield per bag); dry bag mass = bags Ă— mass per bag

Assumptions and limitations
- The initial yields of 40 bricks or 12 blocks per bag are editable examples. Replace them with the appropriate yield for the product, masonry dimensions and joint dimensions you intend to use.
- Counts are positive whole numbers. Entered yield and bag mass are positive.
- Bags round up to a whole number; mass is the dry mass of those bags, excluding mixing water. Waste is not added unless you include it in the entered masonry count or coverage assumption.
- Whole-bag rounding loses information, so bag count does not uniquely recover masonry count or coverage.
Common questions
Is the default yield valid for every mortar?
No. Yield depends on the product, masonry size and joints. Use the manufacturer’s applicable coverage data.
Why does one extra brick sometimes add a bag?
The calculation rounds the quotient up. A positive fraction of another bag requires another whole bag in this purchasing model.
