How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

Example in initial displayed units: x₁ -1, y₁ -2, x₂ 2, y₂ 2 gives Distance 5.

d = √((x₂−x₁)²+(y₂−y₁)²)

Assumptions and limitations

  • The Cartesian axes share the same scale. Coincident points have distance zero. An inverse coordinate is chosen as the other point’s corresponding coordinate plus the positive square root; the reflected solution can have the same distance. A distance must be nonnegative and at least either known coordinate separation.
  • Use compatible units and enough independent values. Clear unknowns before solving backward. Original reference drawings are schematic and do not scale to entered values.

Common questions

Which of the two possible inverse coordinates is returned?

The solver adds the positive square root to the other point’s matching coordinate. A reflected point can have the same distance. The requested distance must be at least either known axis separation.

References

Require a nonnegative Cartesian distance no smaller than either known coordinate separation.
