How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Use the result with context

Results are estimates for planning and education. Confirm rates, taxes, fees, and legal requirements with the relevant institution or a qualified professional before making a financial decision.

Formula and method

For 1,000 material units, an actual price of 5.50 versus a standard price of 5 produces a positive 500 price variance. The same quantity cost 500 more than the standard allowance.

Price variance = quantity × (actual unit price − standard unit price)

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Material quantity
1000
Actual price per material unit
5.5 USD
Standard price per material unit
5 USD
Material price variance
500 USD

Assumptions and limitations

  • Use the same currency and material quantity unit for both prices. The entered quantity must correspond to the price variance being analyzed.
  • Quantity and unit prices must be positive. This isolates the price difference; usage, quality, yield, mix and total production-cost variances are separate.

Common questions

Is a positive price variance favorable?

With this sign convention, no. A positive result means the actual price is above the standard. A negative result means the actual price is below it.

Can I solve for the actual unit price?

Yes. Enter the standard price, quantity and variance, leaving Actual price blank. The actual price equals standard price plus variance divided by quantity.
