How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

With the honey preset of 1.42 kg/L, a mass of 1.42 kg occupies 1 liter. At the fresh-water assumption of 1 kg/L, 1 kg occupies 1 liter.

Mass in kilograms = volume in liters × assumed density in kg/L

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Preset densities in kg/L are: fresh water 1; milk 1.03; honey 1.42; butter 0.959; cooking oil 0.88; olive oil 0.918; sunflower oil 0.96; vegetable oil 0.89; salt water 1.03000001. These are fixed model assumptions, not measurements of a specific product.
  • Actual density depends on temperature, composition and processing. The preset list is not a precise material-property database and offers no custom-density field. Use measured density when exact product mass or volume matters.

Common questions

Is one kilogram always one liter?

No. That equality holds numerically only at a density of 1 kg/L. Other assumed densities produce a different volume for the same mass.

Why can two oils give different results?

The model assigns each listed liquid its own fixed density. Actual products may differ from those presets.
