How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Edit a calculated value to solve backwards, or lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.
Use the result with context
Results are estimates for planning and education. Confirm rates, taxes, fees, and legal requirements with the relevant institution or a qualified professional before making a financial decision.
Formula and method
With a three-year lease, one year remaining and 30,000 km already driven, the same driving pace projects 45,000 km in total. An allowance of 12,000 km per year leaves 9,000 excess km. At 0.25 per km, the charge is 2,250, or 187.50 saved monthly for twelve months.
Projected distance = distance so far × total term ÷ elapsed term; excess = max(projected distance − total allowance, 0); charge = excess × fee
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Total lease term
- 3:0 yrs / mos
- Remaining lease time
- 1:0 yrs / mos
- Distance driven during this lease
- 30000 km
- Annual mileage allowance
- 12000 km
- Excess distance fee
- 0.25 USD / km
- Projected excess distance
- 9000 km
- Predicted lease-end charge
- 2250 USD
- Monthly amount to set aside
- 187.5 USD / mos
Assumptions and limitations
- Enter distance driven during this lease, not the full odometer reading if the car had mileage at delivery. The forecast assumes your driving pace stays constant and applies the annual allowance proportionally to the term. Enter the contract fee in the matching distance unit. Wear charges, taxes, waivers and early termination terms are excluded. Some time must have elapsed, and a positive remaining term is needed for a monthly savings estimate.
- Use consistent units, dates and financial definitions. The calculated result follows the stated assumptions and the amounts entered.
