Formula and method
One kilogram-force is exactly 9.80665 newtons. It is a force unit, while one kilogram by itself is a mass.
Force in newtons = force in kilogram-force × 9.80665
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Kilogram-force
- 1 kgf
- Force in newtons
- 9.80665 N
- Force in another unit

Assumptions and limitations
- Kilogram-force is defined using standard gravity, exactly 9.80665 m/s². It does not mean the weight of a kilogram at every location.
- These are linear force conversions. Signed and zero values are supported; a sign describes a chosen direction. One kip is exactly 1,000 pound-force.
- To calculate gravitational weight from mass, multiply mass by the applicable gravitational acceleration instead of treating kilograms as kilogram-force.
Common questions
Can kilograms be converted to newtons without gravity?
Mass and force are different dimensions. This tool converts kilogram-force to newtons, which uses standard gravity by definition.
What is the difference between kgf and kp?
Kilogram-force and kilopond are names for the same force unit: exactly 9.80665 N.

The pound-force uses the exact international pound and standard gravity instead of the rounded captured factor. One kip is exactly one thousand pound-force, using the international pound and standard gravity.
