How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Private by default

Inputs and results stay in this browser tab. Bookify does not upload or store the values you enter.

Formula and method

1,000 kB is 1 MB and 0.95367431640625 MiB. A decimal megabyte contains 1,000,000 bytes; a mebibyte contains 1,048,576 bytes.

MB = kB / 1000; MiB = kB × 1000 / 1,048,576

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Decimal kilobytes
1000 kB
Binary mebibytes
0.9537 MiB
Decimal megabytes
1 MB

Assumptions and limitations

  • The three fields describe the same byte quantity. kB and MB use powers of 1,000; MiB uses 2²⁰ bytes.
  • A kibibyte (KiB) is 1,024 bytes and is not the same as a kilobyte. Convert a KiB count to kB by multiplying it by 1.024 before using that field.
  • Nonnegative decimal quantities are accepted for unit arithmetic. Files have whole-byte sizes, but displayed storage quantities may already be rounded.

Common questions

Why does the MiB number look smaller than MB?

A mebibyte contains more bytes than a decimal megabyte. The same total byte count therefore occupies fewer MiB than MB.

Are bits and bytes interchangeable?

No. A byte is eight bits. These fields use bytes throughout, with an uppercase B.

References

Bookify keeps decimal kB and MB distinct from binary MiB and corrects the binary equation so all three values represent the same number of bytes.
