How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Inputs and results stay in this browser tab. Bookify does not upload or store the values you enter.

Formula and method

With k=12 and x=3, y is 4.

y=k/x; k=x*y; x=k/y.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The retained inverse-variation model uses y=k/x with nonzero x and y, each with magnitude below 1000. These are interface limits, not universal mathematical bounds.
  • The source chart samples only positive x: from 1 through x+10 in steps of 0.5 when x≤100, otherwise steps of 10. Negative x remains valid numerically and has no chart in this retained presentation.
  • A missing k is x*y. A missing x is k/y. Clear the unknown before solving an inverse, or lock supplied values. Chart samples may extend beyond the numerical input bound and are explanatory.

Common questions

Why is there no chart for negative x?

The source chart samples only positive x: from 1 through x+10 in steps of 0.5 when x≤100, otherwise steps of 10. Negative x remains valid numerically and has no chart in this retained presentation.

How do I find the constant?

Multiply known nonzero x and y to obtain k=x*y.
