Formula and method

A 10 L ideal-gas volume already at 0 °C and 1013.25 hPa remains 10 L under this conventional STP definition.

V_STP = V × (273.15/T) × (P/760); n = PV/(62.36T), with V in L, P in Torr and T in K.

Assumptions and limitations

  • This tool defines conventional STP as 273.15 K and 760 Torr (one standard atmosphere). Other standards use 100 kPa; confirm the convention for your work.
  • Pressure is absolute, temperature is absolute internally and volume must be positive. Use gauge-pressure measurements only after converting to absolute pressure.
  • The gas is ideal, dry and conserved between states. Real gases and wet-gas measurements require additional corrections.
  • The captured gas constant is rounded to 62.36 L·Torr/(mol·K). The hidden n1 and moles values represent the same gas amount; no uncertainty is propagated.

Common questions

Which STP convention is used?

Zero degrees Celsius and one standard atmosphere, represented as 760 Torr.

Does this correct wet gas?

No. Subtract the appropriate water-vapor partial pressure before entering dry-gas pressure.
