Formula and method
An ideal cone with a top diameter of 1 centimeter and an included angle of 90° has a tip depth of 0.5 centimeters.
Full cone depth = diameter ÷ (2 × tan(included angle ÷ 2))
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Diameter
- 1 cm
- Angle
- 90 deg
- Depth
- 0.5 cm
Assumptions and limitations
- It is the depth to the ideal cone tip. For a countersink ending at a pilot-hole diameter, the additional depth uses the difference between the outer and pilot diameters instead. Actual tooling geometry also matters.
- Use consistent units and project-specific dimensions, density and prices. This geometric estimate does not add quantities that are absent from the formula.
Common questions
Is this the extra countersink depth around a pilot hole?
It is the depth to the ideal cone tip. For a countersink ending at a pilot-hole diameter, the additional depth uses the difference between the outer and pilot diameters instead. Actual tooling geometry also matters.
