Assumptions and limitations
- Ordinary feet and inches use the international definitions: one foot is exactly 0.3048 meters and one inch is 0.0254 meters. Combined-unit fields separate components with colons; decimal feet are a different notation.
- The optional US survey foot is retained for historic data and uses exactly 1200/3937 meters. It was deprecated for new US applications in 2023. Human height normally uses international feet, not survey feet.
- The converter applies signed length arithmetic and does not infer a person’s age, health or growth from the measurement.
Common questions
Does 5.5 feet mean 5 feet 5 inches?
No. Half a foot is 6 inches, so 5.5 decimal feet means 5 feet 6 inches.
How do I enter feet and inches?
Enter feet and inches separated by a colon in the combined-unit field. For example, 5:6 means 5 feet 6 inches and equals 167.64 cm.
