How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Use the result with context

Results are estimates for planning and education. Confirm rates, taxes, fees, and legal requirements with the relevant institution or a qualified professional before making a financial decision.

Formula and method

For 10 g at the 18-karat preset of 75% purity and an entered price of 100 per gram of pure gold, content value is 750. A 5% spread gives illustrative bid and ask amounts of 712.50 and 787.50.

Content value = total mass × gold mass fraction × entered pure-gold price per mass; bid/ask = content value × (1 ∓ spread fraction)

Assumptions and limitations

  • Enter your own price; the tool does not retrieve a live gold quote. Match its currency and mass unit to the price you intend.
  • Purity is fixed by the selected preset. The 24-karat option is explicitly 99.9%; other presets include rounded percentages and are not a metal assay.
  • Total mass includes only the material whose selected purity applies. Stones and unrelated components need separate treatment.
  • Troy ounces and ordinary avoirdupois ounces have different masses: 31.1034768 g and 28.349523125 g respectively.
  • The spread is an entered symmetric percentage below/above contained value, from zero to less than 100%. Actual offers can include other fees and assumptions.

Common questions

Is the entered price a live market feed?

No. Supply the price you want to use and verify the selected currency and mass basis.

Why display a percentage beside each karat preset?

The calculation uses that exact numerical preset, including any rounding. The displayed factor makes its arithmetic assumption visible.

References

Bookify limits the symmetric spread to less than 100% so the modeled bid remains positive.
