Formula and method
Example in initial displayed units: Parallel base 1 9, Parallel base 2 5, Cross-section perpendicular height 4, Prism extrusion depth 3 gives Volume 84.
V = (a+b)hL/2
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Parallel base 1
- 9 m
- Parallel base 2
- 5 m
- Cross-section perpendicular height
- 4 m
- Prism extrusion depth
- 3 m
- Volume
- 84 m³
Assumptions and limitations
- The two parallel bases and perpendicular cross-section height define the trapezoid. Extrusion length is a separate perpendicular prism depth. The two bases are interchangeable in the formula. Initial displayed units are meters and cubic meters.
- Select units before entering dimensions. Clear an unknown result before solving backward, and supply enough independent measurements. Display rounding does not represent measurement uncertainty.
- Calculations use 64 significant digits and full-precision π. Original reference drawings explain dimensions and are not drawn to the entered scale.
Common questions
Is trapezoid height the same as prism depth?
No. Height lies in the trapezoidal cross section between its parallel bases. Prism depth extends that cross section into three dimensions.
