How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

For radius 2 ft and height 3 ft, diameter is 4 ft and capacity is 12π ft³.

V = πr²h; d = 2r

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Radius (r)
2 ft
Height (h)
3 ft
Diameter (d)
4 ft
Volume (V)
37.7 cu ft

Assumptions and limitations

  • The model is a full right circular cylinder. It uses internal radius and usable height for capacity; wall thickness and partially filled horizontal tanks need different models.
  • Measurements must describe the same shape. Clear a quantity you want to infer instead of supplying conflicting measurements. Unit selectors are converted before the geometric relationships are applied.
  • Calculations use 64 significant digits with full-precision π; result formatting rounds the displayed value separately. These are ideal geometric models, without material allowances or measurement uncertainty.

Common questions

Is the radius the same as the diameter?

No. Radius is half the diameter. The retained controls allow either measurement and use r = d/2 before computing capacity.

Which gallon does the result use?

The initial gallon result, where offered, uses US liquid gallons. Imperial gallons are a separate selector and have a different volume. Read the displayed unit beside the result.

References

The US fluid ounce uses one 128th of the exact US liquid gallon, replacing the rounded captured reciprocal factor. The US customary cup uses one sixteenth of the exact US liquid gallon, replacing the rounded captured cup volume. Bookify replaces the captured rounded US gallon with the exact 3.785411784-liter definition.
