How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Edit a calculated value to solve backwards, or lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.
Use the result with context
Results are estimates for planning and education. Confirm rates, taxes, fees, and legal requirements with the relevant institution or a qualified professional before making a financial decision.
Formula and method
Divide total fixed cost by the number of units. For example, 12,000 spread over 600 units is 20 per unit. This does not include variable production costs.
Fixed cost per unit = total fixed cost ÷ units
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Total fixed cost
- 12000 USD
- Number of units
- 600
- Average fixed cost
- 20 USD
Assumptions and limitations
- Inputs describe one consistent reporting period. Review the formula and counting conventions before comparing results.
Common questions
Does total fixed cost fall when output rises?
Not in this model. The same fixed amount is spread across more units, reducing cost per unit while total fixed cost stays unchanged.
