Formula and method
A reel holding 200 m of 0.30 mm line is estimated to hold 450 m of 0.20 mm line when packing and fill volume stay the same.
New length = published length × (published diameter / new diameter)²
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Line diameter
- .3 mm
- Line length
- 200 m
- New line diameter
- .2 mm
- New line length
- 450 m
Assumptions and limitations
- All diameters and lengths must be positive. Unit selectors convert measurements before applying the squared diameter ratio.
- The calculation models equal occupied volume for round line with unchanged packing and reel fill. It does not model line compression, braid shape, backing or winding tension.
- Use measured diameter when available. Breaking-strength labels are not a substitute for diameter in this model.
Common questions
What happens if line diameter is halved?
For the same modeled volume, capacity becomes four times as long because length is inversely proportional to diameter squared.
