How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

For 8 pieces each 0.6 m wide and 0.5 m long on fabric 2 m wide, three pieces fit across. Three rows need 1.5 m of fabric length.

Across = floor(fabric width / piece width); rows = ceil(piece count / across); material length = rows × piece length

Assumptions and limitations

  • Pieces are identical rectangles in the entered fixed orientation. The calculator fits as many whole piece widths as possible across the roll, then rounds the row count up to cover the requested whole number of pieces.
  • Piece width must not exceed available fabric width. All lengths and widths are positive, and the requested piece count is a positive whole number.
  • Piece dimensions must already include any cutting or seam allowance. Kerf, shrinkage, pattern alignment, rotated placement, mixed piece sizes and reuse of leftovers are excluded; this is not an optimized nesting calculation.
  • Across and row counts are read-only results because rounding prevents unique inverse count/dimension recovery. The retained length relationship allows a missing piece length to be found from known strip length, widths and count.
  • Fabric price and waste percentage are not inputs here. A purchasing allowance or price estimate must be added separately rather than assumed to be included.

Common questions

Can I rotate pieces to fit more across?

This calculation uses the widths and lengths exactly as entered. You can compare the alternate orientation by swapping piece width and piece length, but it does not combine orientations or optimize nesting.

Why is the last row counted in full?

You still need the full piece length for a partial last row. Rows are rounded up so every requested piece has a slot, even if some slots remain unused.

Does the piece size include seam allowance?

Only if you include it in the entered piece dimensions. The model adds no automatic seam, cutting, shrinkage or matching allowance.

Require a piece width no greater than the available fabric width, avoiding a zero-across division and impossible fixed-orientation layout.
