Use the result with context
Results are estimates for planning and education. Confirm rates, taxes, fees, and legal requirements with the relevant institution or a qualified professional before making a financial decision.
Formula and method
Divide employees who left by the average of beginning and ending employee counts. The result summarizes a period; it does not explain why people left or predict future staffing.
Attrition (%) = departures ÷ ((starting employees + ending employees) ÷ 2) × 100

Assumptions and limitations
- Inputs describe one consistent reporting period. Review the formula and counting conventions before comparing results.
Common questions
Why use an average employee count?
An average reduces the distortion from using only the starting or ending count when staffing changes. Large changes within the period may call for a more detailed average.
