How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.
Use the result with context
Results are estimates for planning and education. Confirm rates, taxes, fees, and legal requirements with the relevant institution or a qualified professional before making a financial decision.
Formula and method
EBIT of 120,000 divided by interest expense of 30,000 gives interest coverage of 4 times. This compares accounting earnings with interest for the same period.
Interest coverage = EBIT ÷ interest expense
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Earnings before interest and taxes
- 120000 USD
- Interest expense for the same period
- 30000 USD
- EBIT interest coverage
- 4
Assumptions and limitations
- Interest expense must be positive. EBIT can be zero or negative; a negative result indicates an EBIT loss rather than positive coverage.
- Use consistent accounting definitions and reporting periods. EBIT coverage does not measure cash availability, principal repayments or a complete debt-service obligation.
- Use consistent currencies. Optional currency conversions use the captured source rates, not live market rates.
Common questions
Is four times automatically a safe level?
The ratio alone cannot establish that. Earnings stability, industry, cash flow, debt maturities and other obligations affect interpretation.
Why is zero interest expense rejected?
Division by zero does not produce a finite coverage ratio. A company with no interest expense should be described separately rather than assigned a numeric result here.
