How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Private by default

Inputs and results stay in this browser tab. Bookify does not upload or store the values you enter.

Formula and method

45° 30′ 0″ equals 45.5°. The third field can show radians, turns, gradians or fine arcsecond units for the same angle.

1 degree = 60 arcminutes = 3,600 arcseconds; 180 degrees = π radians

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Degrees:minutes:seconds
45:30:0 deg / min / sec
Decimal degrees
45.5 deg
Same angle in another unit
0.7941 rad

Assumptions and limitations

  • Enter the compound field as degrees:minutes:seconds. A single leading minus sign applies to the entire angle.
  • The first two fields keep their DMS and decimal-degree representations. The third field provides the additional unit selector.
  • Milliarcseconds, microarcseconds and nanoarcseconds are angular units. They do not express elapsed time or linear distance.
  • Values outside a single revolution are preserved. This table does not validate geographic coordinates, attach north/south/east/west or reduce a bearing to one turn.

Common questions

What is the difference between arcminutes and decimal minutes?

An arcminute is 1/60 degree. In a DMS value, 30 arcminutes adds 0.5 degree, not 0.30 degree.

Can I work backwards from decimal degrees?

Yes. Enter the decimal-degree value and the compound representation updates, along with the third selected angle unit.
