Formula and method
Dividends of 40 from earnings of 100 give a payout ratio of 40%. A dividend of 2 per share and EPS of 5 give the same percentage.
Payout = dividends / net income; per-share payout = dividend per share / EPS; diluted EPS = common income / weighted-average diluted shares

Assumptions and limitations
- Dividends are nonnegative. Earnings and EPS must be nonzero; negative earnings produce a signed ratio with limited payout interpretation.
- The aggregate and per-share methods agree only when they use compatible earnings, share classes and share counts.
- The diluted EPS section uses an entered common-income numerator and positive weighted-average diluted shares. It does not calculate potentially dilutive instruments or their numerator adjustments.
- Use consistent currencies, periods and amount scales. Currency selectors use fixed captured exchange rates, not current market rates.
Common questions
Can zero dividends be entered?
Yes. With nonzero earnings, zero dividends give a zero payout ratio.
Do the displayed payout bands rate an investment?
No. They are numerical ranges, without a company-specific assessment.
