How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Use the result with context

Results are estimates for planning and education. Confirm rates, taxes, fees, and legal requirements with the relevant institution or a qualified professional before making a financial decision.

Formula and method

Reserves of 150 against deposits of 1,000 give a reserve ratio of 15%. The remainder in this simplified allocation is 850.

Reserve ratio = reserves ÷ deposits; remainder = deposits − reserves

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Deposits
1000 USD · million
Reserves
150 USD · million
Deposits less reserves (model remainder)
850 USD · million
Reserve ratio
15 %

Assumptions and limitations

  • Deposits must be positive and reserves must be between zero and deposits. All amounts use the same currency and date.
  • This is an arithmetic allocation model. The remainder is not a determination of actual lending capacity or regulatory compliance; capital, liquidity, funding and other constraints are outside the calculation. No required reserve ratio is supplied.

Common questions

Can I solve for reserves from a percentage?

Yes. Enter deposits and the reserve ratio. A 15% ratio on deposits of 1,000 gives reserves of 150.

What happens at the endpoints?

At 0%, reserves are zero and the remainder equals deposits. At 100%, all deposits are assigned to reserves and the remainder is zero.
