Formula and method
12.5 decimal degrees equal 12 degrees 30 minutes 0 seconds. A signed entry of β12:30:00 equals β12.5 degrees.
Decimal degrees = sign Γ (absolute degrees + minutes/60 + seconds/3,600)
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Angle in decimal or selected unit
- 12.5 deg
- Angle in compound or selected unit
- 12:30:0 deg / min / sec
Assumptions and limitations
- Use colons for compound degrees:arcminutes:arcseconds. A leading minus sign applies to the entire compound angle.
- There are 60 arcminutes per degree and 60 arcseconds per arcminute. A full turn is 360 degrees or 2Ο radians.
- This is a signed angle converter without latitude/longitude limits, compass directions or automatic wrapping to one revolution.
Common questions
Are arcminutes the same as time minutes?
No. Arcminutes measure angle: 60 arcminutes form one degree. Time minutes measure duration.
How do I enter a negative DMS angle?
Put the minus sign before the degree component, such as β12:30:00. It applies to the entire angle.
