Formula and method

At 1,000 revolutions per minute, a 10-millimeter diameter has a cutting speed of about 31.416 m/min. Four teeth at 0.1 millimeters per tooth produce a feed rate of 0.4 m/min.

Cutting speed (m/min) = π × diameter (mm) × rpm ÷ 1,000; feed (mm/min) = rpm × teeth × feed per tooth

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Assumptions and limitations

  • It converts the settings you enter. Suitable chip load and speed depend on the material, cutter, engagement and machine specifications; the equations do not determine those limits.
  • Use consistent units and project-specific dimensions, density and prices. This geometric estimate does not add quantities that are absent from the formula.

Common questions

Does this choose suitable machining settings?
