How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method
One billion bytes equals 1 GB or 1,000 MB in decimal units.
Decimal kB = 1,000 B; MB = 1,000,000 B; binary prefixes use powers of 1,024.
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Value in bytes
- 1000000000 B
- Value in kilobytes
- 1000000 kB
- Value in megabytes
- 1000 MB
- Value in gigabytes
- 1 GB
- Value in other multiples of the byte
- 0.001 TB
Assumptions and limitations
- Arithmetic uses 64 significant decimal digits. Displayed values are rounded separately.
- Each field represents the same quantity in its selected units; enter one known value to calculate its equivalents.
- Decimal kB, MB, GB and TB use powers of 1,000. Binary KiB, MiB and larger IEC prefixes use powers of 1,024 where offered by the selector.
- The converter transforms numeric quantities. Actual stored byte counts are whole numbers; signed inputs can represent changes in storage.
Common questions
Are a GB and a GiB equal?
No. A decimal gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes, while a gibibyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes.
