Formula and method
A desired product mass of 60 g out of 100 g reagent input gives a 60% mass share.
Atom economy = coefficient × desired-product molar mass / sum(coefficient × reagent molar mass)

Assumptions and limitations
- The mass-input branch is a measured mass share and can include yield/loss effects. True theoretical atom economy uses the balanced reaction and stoichiometric molar-mass branch.
- Include all consumed reagents in the denominator, not catalysts or solvents that are recovered unchanged. Atom economy is distinct from reaction yield, solvent use or a full environmental assessment.
Common questions
What does this model assume?
The mass-input branch is a measured mass share and can include yield/loss effects. True theoretical atom economy uses the balanced reaction and stoichiometric molar-mass branch.
Can I solve backward?
Clear the unknown value and enter compatible known values. Choices, one-way outputs and singular boundary cases cannot always be inverted.
