Formula and method
A 10 kg wet sample with 8 kg dry mass contains 2 kg water and 20% wet-basis moisture.
Water mass = wet mass − dry mass; moisture (%) = 100 × water mass / wet mass
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Wet sample mass
- 10 kg
- Dry sample mass
- 8 kg
- Water mass
- 2 kg
- Wet-basis moisture
- 20 %
Assumptions and limitations
- This is wet-basis moisture: water mass divided by total wet mass. Dry-basis moisture uses a different denominator and may exceed 100%.
- Wet mass must be positive. Dry mass may be zero but cannot exceed wet mass; moisture is bounded from 0% to 100%.
- Use mass measurements from the same sample and a suitable drying method. This arithmetic does not identify which lost material was water.
Common questions
What should I check before using this result?
This is wet-basis moisture: water mass divided by total wet mass. Dry-basis moisture uses a different denominator and may exceed 100%.
References
Bookify accepts zero dry mass and bounds wet-basis moisture at 100%.
