How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.
Private by default
Inputs and results stay in this browser tab. Bookify does not upload or store the values you enter.
Formula and method
A 1,000 × 1,000 image at 24 bits per pixel contains 24,000,000 bits: 3,000,000 bytes or 3 MB before headers, padding and compression.
Pixel data bits = width × height × bits per pixel
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Image width
- 1000 pixels
- Image height
- 1000 pixels
- Total bits per pixel
- 24-bit (RGB true color)
- Total pixel count
- 1000000 pixels
- Theoretical packed pixel data
- 3 MB
Assumptions and limitations
- Bit depth here is total bits per pixel across channels. An 8-bit-per-channel RGB image normally needs 24 bits per pixel; channel count is not added automatically.
- The result is ideal packed pixel data. File headers, metadata, row padding, layers, color profiles and compression are excluded. It does not predict a JPEG, PNG or camera RAW file size.
- Pixel dimensions are positive whole numbers. A theoretical result may contain fractional bytes at low bit depths; actual files require whole-byte storage and may pad each row.
- Decimal MB uses 1,000,000 bytes; MiB uses 1,048,576 bytes. A byte contains exactly eight bits.
Common questions
Why is my saved image a different size?
Compression and file structure change the stored size. This model measures only an uncompressed pixel payload and excludes headers and padding.
Should I enter 8 or 24 for RGB?
For three 8-bit color channels, choose 24 total bits per pixel. Eight bits per channel and eight bits per pixel describe different amounts of data.
References
Bookify requires whole positive pixel dimensions while preserving the captured payload equations and unit conversions.
