How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method
For fair independent trials, the second success occurs on trial 3 with probability 2 × 0.5³ = 25%.
P(N=n) = C(n−1,r−1) p^r (1−p)^(n−r)
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- n (number of events)
- 3
- r (number of successes)
- 2
- Probability of one success
- .5
- Probability of Y=n
- 0.25
- Combinations (n-1, r-1)
- 2
Assumptions and limitations
- Trials are independent with the same success probability; n counts all trials including the final success.
- Success and trial counts are positive whole numbers, with r no greater than n. The retained trial cap is 171.
- The zero and one probability endpoints follow the usual discrete distribution, including the empty-failure product when n equals r.
Common questions
What does the result describe?
It describes the chance that trial n is the rth success, including r−1 earlier successes.
