Formula and method
A 6.4 m run with 2 m panels and 10 cm posts needs three spans and four posts. A 1.1 m height using 40 cm stacked panels needs three layers, or nine panels.
Spans = ceil[(run − post width) / (panel width + post width)]; layers = ceil[height / panel height]; panels = spans × layers

Assumptions and limitations
- The geometry assumes a straight open run, one post at each end, and one tie beam per span. Gates, corners, shared posts, slopes and closed loops are excluded.
- Panel dimensions exclude post widths. Both spans and stacked layers round upward; the final panel or layer may require trimming or a compatible product size.
- The model counts whole purchased panels and supports zero entered material prices. Labor, delivery, tax, foundations, hardware and waste beyond the rounded pieces are excluded.
- Changing layers to solve backward returns a compatible full-layer height or panel height; it does not identify a unique height within the ceiling interval. Verify the chosen dimensions against the actual fence system.
Common questions
Why does 1.1 m require three 40 cm layers?
Two layers reach only 0.8 m. Three provide 1.2 m before any permitted trimming; paying for 2.75 panels would understate a whole-panel purchase.
References
Bookify rounds stacked fence layers upward to whole purchased panels while retaining compatible inverse solutions. Bookify requires a positive whole layer count and a run longer than one post, and allows zero material prices.
