How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method
At the air preset of 343 m/s, a frequency of 343 Hz gives a wavelength of 1 metre.
Wavelength = propagation speed ÷ frequency
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Sound frequency
- 343 Hz
- Sound propagation speed
- 343 m/s
- Sound wavelength
- 1 m
Assumptions and limitations
- Speed, frequency and wavelength are positive. The relation applies to a wave with a defined propagation speed in the selected medium.
- Material presets are illustrative constants. Composition, temperature, pressure and wave type can change the actual speed; use the custom option for an appropriate measured value.
- The frequency-range message is descriptive, not a hearing test or an exposure-safety assessment.
Common questions
Does sound wavelength stay the same in different materials?
At the same frequency, wavelength changes in proportion to propagation speed.
Can I enter a measured speed?
Choose Custom medium, then enter the measured propagation speed and frequency or wavelength.
References
Bookify separates overlapping frequency-message ranges so exactly 20 kHz remains in the stated 20 Hz through 20 kHz interval.
