Formula and method
For 2 kg and an entered specific heat of 1,000 J/(kg·K), a 10 °C temperature increase requires 20 kJ. The same decrease gives −20 kJ.
Sensible heat = mass × specific heat × (final temperature − initial temperature)

Assumptions and limitations
- Mass and specific heat are positive. Specific heat is constant over the entered temperature interval.
- This model includes sensible heat only. It excludes phase-change energy, reaction energy, heat losses and heating of containers.
- Material presets are illustrative constant values, not temperature-dependent property tables. Use a suitable measured or published value for your material and conditions.
- Positive heat means heat added; negative means removed. Temperature differences use interval conversions, so 10 °C change equals 18 °F change.
- Initial and final temperatures must exceed absolute zero.
Common questions
Can I calculate cooling energy?
Yes. Set the final temperature below the initial temperature. The heat result is negative under the heat-added convention.
Does selecting water account for boiling?
No. This constant-specific-heat model excludes phase changes and their latent heat.
