Formula and method

An 8 × 10 m horizontal footprint at 9:12 pitch has 100 m² of sloped area. At 2 m² effective coverage per panel, the area-only lower bound is 50 panels.

Sloped area = footprint area × √(1 + (rise/12)²); panel lower bound = ceil(roof area / effective panel area)

Assumptions and limitations

  • Measured mode uses an actual roof-surface rectangle. Footprint mode uses horizontal projected roof area and a single uniform pitch, with rise per twelve horizontal units. Include required overhangs in the dimensions.
  • Pitch options retain the captured 1:12 through 30:12 range. The multiplier uses the geometric square-root relation instead of three-decimal rounded factors.
  • Enter effective coverage dimensions after required overlaps. Dividing total area by panel coverage gives only a lower bound; cuts, orientation, roof edges and panel layout can require additional panels.
  • The model does not subtract openings or include valleys, flashing, trim, fasteners, waste allowance, labor or tax. Split roofs with different pitches into separate area calculations.
  • Prices are entered per panel. Currency conversion uses captured exchange rates rather than current supplier quotes.

Common questions

Why can a roof need more panels than this count?

The arithmetic considers total area only. Individual panels must fit the roof layout, and offcuts or overlaps can prevent all purchased area from becoming usable coverage.

Bookify accepts zero panel prices and zero modeled material costs while retaining positive roof and panel dimensions. Bookify derives each rise-to-twelve pitch multiplier from sqrt(1 + (rise/12)^2), avoiding rounded source factors at whole-panel boundaries.
