How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

A 2 kg sample with specific heat 500 J/(kg·K) has heat capacity 1,000 J/K. A small 1 K temperature rise would require 1,000 J if the specific heat stays constant and no phase change occurs.

Total heat capacity = mass × mass-specific heat capacity

Assumptions and limitations

  • Mass is positive; specific and total heat capacities are nonnegative. Choose Custom to enter a measured property. A zero specific heat gives zero capacity, but the inverse cannot determine mass from two zeros.
  • Material choices are fixed illustrative reference values. Actual specific heat depends on temperature, pressure, phase and composition; use a value for the relevant state and process, such as constant pressure or constant volume.
  • Calories here are explicitly thermochemical (4.184 J), and BTU units are International Table (1,055.05585262 J). Denominators represent temperature differences: 1 K and 1 Celsius degree are equal intervals.
  • This calculates heat capacity, not total thermal energy. Multiplying by a finite temperature change assumes suitably constant specific heat and no latent heat or phase transition.

Common questions

How is heat capacity different from specific heat?

Heat capacity describes the entire sample and scales with its mass. Specific heat is the capacity per unit mass for the relevant material state and process.

Do Fahrenheit and Celsius denominators need an offset?

No. They represent temperature changes, so only the interval scale changes. A Fahrenheit degree is 5/9 of a kelvin.

References

BTU-based thermal units use the International Table BTU and exact mass, time, length and temperature-interval definitions. Calorie-based specific heats use the thermochemical calorie, exactly 4.184 joules, consistently with the heat-capacity units.
