How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Inputs and results stay in this browser tab. Bookify does not upload or store the values you enter.
Formula and method
A 2 kg object with velocity components 3, 4 and 0 m/s has momentum components 6, 8 and 0 kg·m/s, with magnitude 10 kg·m/s.
Momentum component = mass × velocity component; vector magnitude = √(x² + y² + z²)

Assumptions and limitations
- The scalar calculation and the three-dimensional calculation use separate mass fields. Set both if comparing their results.
- Components are signed in a fixed Cartesian coordinate system. Magnitudes are nonnegative, and a stationary object has zero momentum.
- Mass must be positive. This is the classical relation p = mv, without relativistic effects.
- Recovering a component from a magnitude is sign-ambiguous. The retained square-root inverse chooses a nonnegative component; enter the signed component directly when direction is known.
- A zero velocity and zero momentum do not uniquely determine mass. The calculator cannot infer missing physical information from that pair.
Common questions
Is the magnitude the sum of the components?
No. Perpendicular components combine by the square root of their squared sum; their ordinary sum is not the vector magnitude.
References
Bookify accepts stationary bodies and zero momentum magnitudes while retaining positive masses and component-direction checks.
