How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

A material with density 2,000 kg/m³ occupying 0.03 m³ has a mass of 60 kg. Supply the density appropriate to the material and its conditions.

Mass = density × volume; density = mass ÷ volume

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Material density
2000 kg/m³
Occupied volume
0.03 m³
Material mass
60 kg

Assumptions and limitations

  • Density, volume and mass must be positive. The density is a supplied bulk average or a uniform-material density, not a material selected automatically.
  • Use consistent material conditions, including temperature, pressure, moisture and packing where relevant. The model does not account for their effects on density.
  • Mass is distinct from gravitational weight. To obtain a force, a separate gravitational acceleration is required.
  • US liquid and UK imperial volumes are distinct. Cups use the US customary 236.5882365 mL convention; the tablespoon and teaspoon options are metric 15 mL and 5 mL.

Common questions

Can I calculate volume from a measured mass?

Yes. Enter a positive mass and the applicable density; the model returns volume as mass divided by density.

Does the calculator know the density of my material?

No. You supply the density. A generic value may differ from the density of the actual sample, especially for porous or packed materials.

References

Bookify uses exact customary mass and volume definitions for density units, replacing rounded factors in the reference. Bookify replaces the captured rounded US gallon with the exact 3.785411784-liter definition. The US fluid ounce uses one 128th of the exact US liquid gallon, replacing the rounded captured reciprocal factor. The US customary cup uses one sixteenth of the exact US liquid gallon, replacing the rounded captured cup volume.
