How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

Time positions of 1 hour 30 minutes and 4 hours differ by 2 hours 30 minutes. Swapping the positions leaves the absolute difference unchanged.

Absolute difference = |second time position − first time position|

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

First elapsed-time position
1:30:0 hrs / min / sec
Second elapsed-time position
4:0:0 hrs / min / sec
Absolute time difference
2:30:0 hrs / min / sec

Assumptions and limitations

  • Both inputs refer to positions on the same continuous time axis. The result is an absolute difference and has no direction or sign.
  • There is no calendar date, time-zone or daylight-saving conversion. A midnight crossing must be expressed on the same extended timeline, such as 23:00 and 25:00.
  • Entering 23:00 and 01:00 gives a 22-hour absolute difference; the tool does not assume that the second value means the following day.
  • A difference alone cannot uniquely recover a missing time position without choosing a side of the other position. The retained inverse relations do not provide calendar scheduling semantics.

Common questions

How do I represent two hours across midnight?

Use 23:00:00 for the first position and 25:00:00 for the second, or equivalent elapsed positions two hours apart.
